Vegan Formulas: What Actually Changes in the Bottle

🕒 2 min read✎ The Velura Journal24 July 2026

"Vegan" on a cosmetic label describes the ingredient origins — no animal-derived substances — but what actually changes in the bottle?

The classic swaps: beeswax becomes plant waxes (candelilla, carnauba), lanolin becomes plant butters and squalane, animal collagen becomes hydrolysed plant proteins or is replaced by ingredients that support your own collagen instead. Honey and milk derivatives get plant-based humectant stand-ins.

Performance difference: for hydration, none worth naming — shea butter, plant squalane and hyaluronic acid (fermentation-derived) are the backbone of modern formulas anyway. The vegan version of a body milk isn't a compromise; it's usually just the modern formula.

One caveat: vegan ≠ cruelty-free ≠ "natural" — three separate claims. Check for all the ones you care about.
